gHillwalking
Hillwalking
is an activity which allows you to view some of the world’s most
spectacular scenery at a pace that suits all. Most hillwalking can take
place in areas that are easily accessible and only a good pair of walking
boots is required. But safety is an important issue if you plan to venture
into areas that are isolated or whose route covers high ground. Taking
some simple precautions such as carrying a survival bag with bad weather
clothing and a compass will help stop minor incidents turning into emergencies.
The stunning hills of Scotland offer some of the best hillwalking in the
world and with over 280 of Scotlands mountains between 3,000 and 4,500
ft high plus 221 free-standing mountain peaks and many other fine peaks,
these hills were made for walking.
From perfectly glaciated glens to high sweeping mountain plateaux and challenging
peaks, Scotland is a country blessed with a landscape your feet will be
itching to explore time and again. This is a land that boasts beauty and
history in equal measure, a world where the sense and the feeling of wilderness
is always just a step away. It's best explored on foot, and if you’ve
never walked in the Scottish hills...you really should get out more!
Whether you are planning on walking a major route over several days or
want to walk taking only a day, Scotland has a multitude of options, from
superb 'horseshoe' day circuits to National Trails that lead you through
one of Europe's premier landscapes. Numerous maps, books, guides and websites
are available to the independent traveller, covering everything from walking
routes to accommodation. But if you want to relax a little and enjoy the
benefit and knowledge of professional mountain leaders and instructors,
you won’t be short of choice - and it could give you the ideal start.
The National Parks of Loch Lomond or the Cairngorms, the ‘alpine’
Black Cuillin Mountains on the Isle of Skye, the extraordinary terraced
slopes of the Torridon National Nature Reserve in the North-west Highlands,
or the graceful peaks of the Mamores near Ben Nevis, all have their own
unique beauty. To find out more about hillwalking and what is available
