| Hiking in
Namibia’s Fish River Canyon Located
in the South of the Country, many people are surprised to discover that
Namibia is home to the world’s second largest canyon – Fish
River Canyon.
A true challenge awaits the very fit, experienced and self-sufficient hikers
at the Fish River Canyon. Due to the high temperatures that hit the canyon,
hiking is only allowed between April 15 and September 15. Hikers are responsible
for their own food, equipment, safety and transport to/from the canyon
and must stay at least one night in the national park, either at Hobas
Campsite or Ai-Ais Rest camp. The hike is 4 or 5 days hike covering 80
– 90 km in what can be the most extreme temperature, even in the
cooler months. This is not for the faint-hearted or those without hiking
experience in Africa - however for the hiker looking for a challenge the
sense of achievement after the hike can make it all worthwhile.
Namibia has many other adventure activities available including Sandboarding
(The
idea is to push off the top of a dune, and lie on the board as it slides
down. Speeds easily reach 70km/h!), Sand Skiing (much like its cousin on
snow), Dune Thunderball (You ride inside an oversized ball and hurtle down
dunes – complete madness), Surfing, Wakeboarding, Para Gliding and
many, many more. The Namibia Tourist Board website has a full list and
more information.
