The U.S. State Department is now urging Americans traveling to Nepal to defer non-essential travel within the country and advised against any road travel in areas outside of the Kathmandu Valley following threats of attacks by Maoist insurgents.
U.S. State Department has said that "Travel via road in some areas outside of the Kathmandu Valley continues to be dangerous and should be avoided".
Previously travel warnings had been issued last October allowing only non-emergency workers and families of staff at the U.S. embassy to return to Kathmandu while also warning of possible attacks against American citizens.
In the latest warning, the U.S. State Department recommended that citizens travel by air in Nepal whenever possible. "The Embassy has periodically received information that the Maoists might attempt to attack or take actions specifically against U.S. citizens, particularly in regions of the country where Maoists are active," the U.S. State Department said.
