Tips
Before you go
• Make sure that you check you have a valid passport
that does not expire while you are away. Some countries require you to
have a passport that is valid for three months after your return.
• Check that you have all valid visas required.
The last thing you want is to not be allowed entry to a country because
you don’t have the correct visa.
• Always familiarize yourself with local laws and
customs of the countries that you are traveling to. While in a foreign
country, you are subject to the laws of that country.
• It’s a good idea to make 2 photocopies
of your passport identification page and insurance documents. This will
be useful if your passport is lost or stolen and you need to replace it.
Leave one copy at home with friends or relatives. Carry the other with
you in a separate place from your passport.
• If you are carrying travelers cheques it is also
an idea to make a note of their serial numbers and keep it in a safe place.
• Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or
friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency. If
you are able to use your mobile phone while you are away then make sure
that your family and friends know the number.
• Check what vaccinations you need with your GP
at least six weeks before you travel.
While Traveling
• With the tightening of security at airports,
rail stations and bus terminals it is important not to leave your luggage
unattended. You may be up for a large fine if you do so or your luggage
could be destroyed.
• To avoid being a target of crime, try not to
wear conspicuous clothing and expensive jewelry and do not carry excessive
amounts of money or unnecessary credit cards.
• In order to avoid violating local laws, deal
only with authorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or
antiques.
• Always be sure that you know where the
nearest embassy or consulate is situated. If you get into trouble, always
contact them. They will be able to offer advise and help.
